EGaPS: EVN Galactic Plane Survey -- search for more K-band
calibrators using EVN

Objectives of the campaign
A 48 hour observing session with the European VLBI Network at
K-band (22 GHz) for observing 369 radio candidate source was run on
2009.10.27—2009.10.29. The goal of the experiment was to increase
the number of compact extragalactic radio sources useful as calibrators
near the Galactic plane for supporting
VERA and
VLBA
experiments focused on the study of galactic objects. Previous
observations with the VLBA in 1994--2009 in S/X produced
a list of 4337 sources, with position accuracy better
than 5 mas and with S/X images. However, the density of this catalogue is
not sufficient to provide enough calibrators closer than 2°
near the Galactic plane for VERA and VLBA observations of many interesting
galactic objects. VERA observations, in particular, critically depends
on availability of calibrators within 2°.2 of a target source.

Results

A paper with results is about to be submitted to Monthly Notices of
the Royal Astronomical Society. A draft of the paper is available

Of 369 target sources, 109 has three or more detections. We have determined
their positions and estimated correlated flux densities. The correlated
flux densities of detected sources are in the range of 20 to 300 mJy.
The median position uncertainty is 9 mas. We also detected 9 water masers,
two of them new. We determined position of masers with accuracies
30–200 mas, determined velocities of maser components and
their correlated flux densities.
